Take your own boat or charter a cruise to this unique ecosystem, featuring a herd of woodland caribou and arctic-alpine vegetation. The islands also offer excellent fishing in sheltered channels and bays, as well as many spots great for camping. The Slate Islands are located 13 km off the shore of Terrace Bay. Some geologists have theorized that the Slate Islands were formed as a result of a meteorite smashing into the earth's surface some 900 million years ago. The Lake surrounds the central uplift and submerges the surrounding crater formed when the meteorite hit the earth.
